What to Eat B'ham: Week of 4/8/18
On this addition of What to Eat B'ham, I wanted to talk about something near and dear to my heart... sushi! Sushi is a food I could eat pretty much for every meal and I love seeing new takes on it. Today I will be talking about a new(ish) twist on my favorite food- sushi burritos. Sushi burritos have been making waves around the country for a while now, but they're my new obsession, because who doesn't want to be able to whole a giant sushi roll in their hands??

Wasabi Juan's
This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Birmingham. I take everyone here when they come to visit and they always ask to go back. My mom came to visit me a few years ago and still talks about this place.
The original location is in the heart of Avondale, right next to Avondale Brewing. They don't serve alcohol, but encourage you to get beer from next door to enjoy with your meal... how cool??
The menu
Wasabi Juan's offers not one, but two kinds of sushi burritos- those with raw fish, and those with cooked ingredients. I always opt for the raw fish options, but they have some awesome cooked burritos as well. They also offer raw and cooked fish tacos and a whole bunch of snacks, such as the citrus edamame, nachos, and frushi (sushi made of fruit, Nutella, and rice crispies). The restaurant also serves Mexican sodas (made with real sugar, not corn syrup). Every entree is served with chips and salsa, which, while wacky, adds to the Mexican fusion vibe.
The best sellers on the menu include:

- The LHM (which stands for lord have mercy, which I caught myself saying on more than one occasion), which has spicy tuna, shrimp, cream cheese, spicy mayo, unagi sauce, and avocado, oh my!
- The Ignition (pictured above), which has spicy tuna, fresh jalapeƱo, spicy sriracha mayo, DORITOS, and even more sriracha. The Doritos are a little odd, but once you get used to that, it seems very in place. This is my personal favorite and I would have this every day if I wouldn't get fat.
- 4:20 nachos- the one that confirms that this place is the brainchild of a bunch of stoners. These things are so crazy that they actually work. They start with a base of Doritos (notice a trend?), and are piled high with spicy tuna, avocado slices, unagi sauce, and spicy mayo. Get these to share or eat them all yourself before anyone else can touch 'em. These are worth the visit alone
- The Avondale taco- this is the only taco on the menu I've tried, but man it's good. I like the burritos more for the consistency of the rice, but the tacos are a close second. This one includes spicy tuna, avocado, mango slaw (yuuumm), and jalapeƱos
The verdict?
Yes. Obviously. All the time.
Go now. Run, don't walk.
